Lady Footballer
The year 2 children were very lucky to have a visit from Luton Town FC ladies goalkeeper, Angelica, this week.
She spoke to the children about her love of sport and all the different jobs you could do related to football e.g. if you also love writing you could become a journalist writing about football. She also shared her medals and achievements with the children as well as a few tricks!
Nurturing Nature
Year 2 have worked extremely hard this half term and shown the value of resilience in their SATS.
They enjoyed a well deserved end to their topic ‘Nurturing Nature’ where they visited Dallow Downs. Whilst there the children enjoyed healthy snacks, observed plants growing and had a chance to play and explore with their friends.
Thank you to all of the parents for supporting this.
World Maths Day
Year 2 loved celebrating World Maths Day with a range of activities from problem solving, Bee-Bots, dominoes, shop role plays as well as a workshop about 3D shapes provided by The Brainwave Education company.
Fire service visit
Year 2 were lucky enough to have a visit from Bedfordshire Fire Brigade to end their topic of 'The Great Fire of London.' The children were able to see how fire services have evolved since the biggest tragedy in London on record.
Easter Bonnet Competition
Lots of children in Year 2 enjoyed making an Easter bonnet or basket this year at home. The Easter bonnet parade made it especially difficult for the teachers to choose a winner. Well done to everyone for their hard work and effort.
The Great Fire of London Wow Day
Year 2 recently enjoyed their WOW day to immerse them in the era of The Great Fire of London.
The children enjoyed learning about how the fire started and why it spread so quickly. They also had the opportunity to make Tudor houses, bake bread like the great Thomas Farriner, paint fire pictures and make quills to practise writing like Samuel
Pepys.
The children also tea stained paper in preparation for a writing task later in the term.
Our Whipsnade Zoo Visit
Year 2 children finished off their 'Happy Habitats' topic with a trip to Whipsnade zoo. The children had a workshop to embed all of their prior knowledge about habitats as well as touch and feel real life artefacts. They were also lucky enough to be invited to help Whipsnade staff paint the sea lion enclosure using handprints - a permanent future display at Whipsnade.
Reduce, reuse and recycle Wow day
Our topic in Year 2 for Spring 1 is 'Reduce, Reuse and Recycle' and the children enjoyed their Wow day on the first day back where they learnt lots about recycling and thought carefully about how they could reuse things instead of just throwing them away. Perhaps at home you could give them the role of recycling all of your waste. On the day the children also used old boxes and materials to create special Earths to show care for the world.
Amazing Africa
To kick start their Autumn 2 topic 'Amazing Africa' the children started the half term with a Wow day where they celebrated all things African as well as researching information about the continent. The children made African necklaces and had a music session on the African drums. They tasted a mystery fruit and vegetable - both native to Africa. Most pupils recognised the mango but not many were able to identify the mystery vegetable which was boiled yam. We explored how to use Aloe Vera as a moisturiser for our skin. Children really enjoyed this activity.
