RHS School Gardening Award
We are thrilled to have been awarded a Level 1 RHS Schools Gardening Award.
Here is what we have been doing around school;
At our Junior site we have been working hard to improve the biodiversity of our school grounds by adding lots of butterfly and bee friendly plants and flowers. We have a growing area with a Polytunnel where the children can grow fruit and vegetables to eat. Each Year group has their own smaller growing space where they can plan, plant and nurture what they would like to grow. We are also developing a sensory garden at our Infant site to improve pupils interaction with their outdoor environment whilst increasing their educational development, concentration, skills and ecological awareness.
The majority of our growing areas are in raised beds to allow easy access for all pupils including wheelchair users. We have recycled tyres as planters around school as these are easy to reach and provide small pockets of planting for pupils to nurture. We have benches and rest areas so that staff and pupils can rest and enjoy the fruits of their labour!
We have a fruit and vegetable garden with a polytunnel, complete with compost bins and water butts.
We have small planting areas for each year group so that they can plan and plant their own plants. We grow sunflowers from seed in the summer for the children to take home and grow at home. We have planted lots of tulip and daffodil bulbs around school.
We are adding bee and bird friendly plants and hedging plants wherever we can.
